faqs carpets underlay kent

F.A.Q.s
(Frequently Asked Questions)

Do I really need new underlay with a new carpet?
In most cases, yes. Old underlay compresses over time and can reduce comfort, insulation and lifespan of the new carpet. >>> More on the importance of carpet underlay

Is wool always more expensive than man-made?
Often, yes. Wool carpet is prized for comfort and natural resilience, while man-made can be brilliant for stain resistance and busy households.   >>> More on wool and silk prices

What’s the difference between cheap underlay and good underlay?

It’s massive, honestly. Underlay affects how your carpet feels underfoot, how long it lasts, how warm it keeps the room, and even how well it holds its shape. Cheap underlay can flatten quickly which makes the carpet feel tired and worn far sooner than it should. Good underlay costs a little more but usually saves you money in the long run because it protects your carpet.

Is thicker underlay always better?

Not always. Thicker can feel nicer, but the right underlay depends on the carpet and where it’s going. Too soft or too thick in the wrong place can make the carpet feel unstable, especially on stairs. We’ll always recommend the best option based on the carpet you choose and how the room is used.

Do I really need new underlay if my old one “looks fine”?

Most of the time, yes. Old underlay might look alright on top but be crushed underneath, especially in walkways and doorways. New carpet on tired underlay is a bit like putting new tyres on a car with knackered suspension — it won’t perform as it should. If your current underlay is genuinely in great condition, we’ll tell you, but usually replacing it is the best result.

Which underlay is best for stairs?

Stairs need something supportive and stable — not too soft. A lot of people assume “the softest underlay is the best”, but on stairs it can actually cause movement and faster wear. We’ll recommend a stair-suitable underlay that gives comfort but still keeps the carpet secure and tidy.

Does underlay help with noise and soundproofing?

Yes, it can make a big difference. A good underlay helps reduce footsteps, general noise and echo, especially upstairs. If sound reduction is important (kids, pets, wooden floors under the carpet etc.), just tell us and we’ll guide you to the best type for it.

What is “pile reversal” or “shading” on carpet?

This is one of the most common questions we get. Pile reversal (also called shading or watermarking) is when the carpet looks lighter or darker in patches depending on the direction of the fibres and how the light hits it. It can sometimes look like marks or “stains” even though it isn’t damage. It’s a natural characteristic of some carpets — especially softer piles — and it isn’t something that cleaning will fix.

Why does my carpet look different depending on the light or time of day?

Totally normal. Carpet fibres reflect light differently depending on the angle, and sunlight can make the texture show more. You might notice it more in the morning or late afternoon when the light is low. It’s not a fault — just the way the pile sits and reflects light.

What are “pole marks” or “vacuum lines” in new carpet?

Pole marks are faint lines or marks that can appear after fitting, often caused by the carpet pile being brushed or moved during installation. You can also get vacuum lines from cleaning. They normally settle down over time as the carpet relaxes and the pile recovers. A gentle vacuum in different directions and regular use usually sorts it.

Do fitted carpets always have joins (seams)?

Sometimes, yes. Most carpets come in standard roll widths, so depending on the room size and shape, a join might be unavoidable. The aim is always to place it in the least noticeable area and make it as neat and invisible as possible. We’re very fussy with joins — if we can avoid one, we will.

Will I be able to see the carpet join?

Most of the time, no — or only if you go hunting for it. The visibility depends on the carpet type, lighting, and where the join needs to go. Some carpets hide joins brilliantly, others (especially plain light colours) can show more. We’ll advise you before you commit, so there are no surprises.

Can you fit carpet over floorboards?

Yes, but it often needs preparation first. Old floorboards can be uneven or squeaky, which can affect the finish. In some homes we recommend ply-boarding or local repairs to make everything solid and smooth. It’s not always needed, but when it is, it makes a huge difference.

My floor creaks — will new carpet stop it?

Sometimes it reduces it, but it won’t always fix it completely. Creaks are usually movement in the floorboards or joists. We can often secure boards where possible before fitting, but in older houses it’s not always a perfect science. We’ll always do what we can to improve it.

Do you move furniture?

We can move most normal furniture, yes. We just ask that smaller items and breakables are cleared beforehand (lamps, ornaments, toys, clothes etc.). For very heavy items like big wardrobes, pianos or fish tanks, we’ll talk it through in advance and plan around them safely.

Do I need to take doors off before fitting?

Not usually, but sometimes doors need trimming if the new carpet and underlay are thicker than what was there before. If that’s likely, we’ll let you know beforehand. We always try to keep everything neat and working properly when we leave.

How long does carpet fitting take?

A typical bedroom is often done in a few hours, stairs and landings can take most of a day, and a full house is usually spread over multiple days. It depends on prep, access and how much needs moving. We’ll give you a realistic time estimate when we quote.

Do I need to be at home for the fitting?

Ideally yes at the start, just so we can confirm everything and answer any questions. Some customers leave us a key once they trust us, which is fine too. We’re a local family-run business and we treat homes with respect — but we’ll always agree a plan that works for you.

Can you take up and dispose of the old carpet?

Yes, we can. We’ll price it clearly so you know exactly what’s included. Some people prefer to remove it themselves to save a bit of money — either way is fine.

When can I put furniture back on the new carpet?

Usually straight away, but take care with dragging heavy items. We recommend lifting rather than pulling where possible. The carpet may look a little “fluffy” or marked at first — that’s normal and settles after a few days of use.

How do I look after my new carpet properly?

Regular vacuuming is the main thing. For the first few weeks, you might notice a bit of fluff (shedding) which is normal with new carpet. If you spill something, blot it quickly and don’t scrub it into the fibres. If you ever need advice, just ask us — we’d rather help early than see a small spill turn into a bigger problem.

How soon can you fit after I choose a carpet?

It depends on stock availability and how busy our fitting diary is. Some carpets can be fitted fairly quickly, others have a lead time. Once you choose your luxury carpet, we’ll confirm a realistic date and keep you updated.

Do you offer carpets supplied and fitted, or fitting only?

We specialise in luxury fitted carpets - supply and fit, because it means we can guarantee the right materials, correct underlay and a proper finish. If you already have your own carpet, we can sometimes fit it, but we’ll need to check it’s suitable first.

What happens if there’s an issue after fitting?

If you’re not happy, tell us. Simple as that. We’re local, we’re established, and we care about our reputation. Most things are easy to sort if they’re raised early — and we’ll always do our best to leave you happy with the job.

Highly recommend the Fitted Carpet Company. Tony, Mark and Jack were all extremely knowledgeable and helpful throughout the process and allowed us to make our own decision. In the end we chose a good quality wool carpet and have no regrets as it looks fantastic and will last for years. I appreciated the ‘all in’ pricing. We will use them again.

We have recently completed a 1 year renovation of our home. Tony, Jack and team have replaced all our flooring - 5 bedrooms and hallways in carpet, kitchen, utility room, cloakroom and bathrooms in Amtico as well as 2 custom rugs for our living areas and screeding of floors. Every room has been completed to an extremely high standard and the team are a pleasure to have in the house. They really have done a stunning job and we are absolutely thrilled with the results. Nothing is too much bother for Tony and team. For example, our fitting dates slipped which meant Tony had to store a large amount of carpet for us for a few months. Not a problem. One floor was very damaged and needed more work than anticipated when screeding. Not a problem. Rooms ran behind schedule and we needed to move fitting dates. Not a problem. Thank you so much for working with us on 2025 😊

Jack fitted a bathroom lino for us and an Entrance Hall carpet. He was very professional and showed care and pride in his work. Tony and Natalie were also very helpful in the process of choosing the flooring we want. I will 100 percent use them next time.

There was a lack of professional behavior. Even after reporting the problem, no solution was found. The service quality was poor and the entire experience was unsatisfactory.

We ordered carpets for three rooms. The Fitted Carpet Company were happy to stagger fitting to allow us to empty rooms and even gave a hand with heavy furniture. The carpets were fitted beautifully and we are really pleased with how quick and efficient this was. We wouldn’t hesitate to use them again and would definitely recommend to anyone who wants a good value, well fitted carpet from a company that provide exceptional service.
